The Spawts Story

It all started with a single step. Having newly arrived in Vancouver, Chadwick began Spawts with a deep love of pets and a joy of working with clay. A lot has happened in the 20 years since.

First there was a single keepsake for a friend’s dog, then a growing labor of love consuming nights and weekends while he pursued a corporate career path. Finally, his bookkeeper made a casual remark that Chadwick could live off of Spawts if he had to. Chadwick quit his job that same day.  

After years of making Spawts for others, it wasn’t until Chadwick’s dog, Jackson, was dying of cancer that he decided to make an impression for himself. That desire to keep a piece of Jackson nearby changed Chadwick. He now understood firsthand the importance of Spawts. 

Then came Kyle. With a background in performance, visual art, and years of Customer Service experience, Kyle met Chadwick in the summer of 2015 while vacationing in Vancouver. We’ve been together ever since and have become partners in life and in our growing family-run Studio.  

Over 100,000 Spawts later, those original passions of handmade ceramics and pets still drive us to craft each mug, candle and custom item just for you. Whether we’re hand-throwing vessels on the potter’s wheel, or glazing our distinctive Fur Match Spawts, we draw from our years of experience to honour your loved one. We still get excited to see every impression arrive in the studio, to read the sweet and funny names of each pet, to feel the love in each pet’s photo we receive. We love what we do. 

We work hard to keep Spawts accessible. That means we sell directly through our online Shop and through hundreds of vet clinics across North America. We value supporting local business and partner with other BC artisans and small businesses for our materials, framing, and packaging. 

We love living and making amidst the beauty of British Columbia. Our natural glazes and West Coast aesthetic are inspired by this place we call home. For those who are able to come by our Vancouver studio, our dog Cannon can’t wait to meet you.
